The Importance of SPF Protection for Healthy, Beautiful Skin

As we move into the warmer months, it's important to remember the importance of sun protection for your skin. Sun damage can cause a range of issues, from premature aging to more serious conditions …

Houston summers are long, and the sun here does not negotiate. Daily sun protection is the single most useful thing most people can do for their skin — and most people skip it, or use it inconsistently, or reach for it only at the pool. Cumulative UV exposure is what drives the damage I see most: dark spots, uneven tone, fine lines, premature aging, and at the serious end, skin cancer. Worn every day, SPF prevents the bulk of it. That is not a marketing claim. It is the most evidence-backed thing in skincare.

What SPF Numbers Actually Mean

When you pick up a sunscreen, you'll see strengths like SPF 33, 45, or 50. SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, and it measures how well the product blocks UVB rays — the rays that burn the skin and contribute to skin cancer.

The numbers climb steeply, then flatten. The protection they give against UVB looks like this:

  • SPF 33 — roughly 97% of UVB blocked
  • SPF 45 — roughly 98%
  • SPF 50 — roughly 99%

No sunscreen reaches 100%, which is the part people miss. The jump from SPF 33 to SPF 50 is two percentage points, not double the protection. So a higher number is not permission to stay out longer or skip the rest — protective clothing, a hat, and shade during the peak hours of the day still do real work. And whatever strength you choose, SPF 30 and above needs to go back on every two hours, and again after you swim or sweat. Sunscreen wears off. That is the rule most people break.

Choosing an SPF for Your Skin

The right SPF is the one that fits your skin and your day. Three things to weigh: your skin type, your activity level, and how much sun you'll actually be in. A reactive or breakout-prone complexion wants a different formula than dry or mature skin; a morning runner needs something that survives sweat; a desk day under glass is a different exposure than a Saturday outdoors. I'll match you to a product that fits all three rather than handing you whatever sits on the front shelf.

At Vera Pelle, the professional lines I carry — Marini SkinSolutions, Dermalogica, and HL Holy Land Cosmetics — each have sun protection worth knowing, and I'll talk you through which one suits your skin in the treatment room. Sun protection also folds naturally into a European facial, where I assess your skin in person and build a routine around it.

What Daily SPF Prevents

Worn daily, SPF heads off the conditions that send most people in to see me in the first place: sunspots, hyperpigmentation, uneven tone, and the fine lines that read as premature aging. Sun damage is the engine behind all of them.

It also works the other direction. If you already have sunspots or hyperpigmentation, consistent SPF keeps them from deepening, and over time it gives the rest of your routine room to fade what's there. You cannot lighten a spot you keep re-exposing to the sun. Protection first, correction second — that order matters.

Daily SPF is the least glamorous step in any routine and the one that pays off the longest. If you want help choosing the right one for your skin, that is a conversation I'm happy to have.
